Legends of Wrestlemania – Hands on Review (PS3, XBox 360)
After a few hours of this game I was tempted to get my Wrestlemania collection out and watch some of these matches again I was that into this game. A trip down memory lane with some of the best characters in WWE history is just what this genre of game needed in my opinion.
From Andre the Giant to Yokozuna, from Stone Cold Steve Austin to Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior, many a legend has made its way into Legends of Wrestlemania. With the exception Of Mick Foley, Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat I don’t think there can be much complaints with the 40ish strong roster.
The controls are a very slimmed down version of Smackdown vs RAw with a number of grapples resulting in chain grapples (where players hit the on screen button prompts to pull off some combination moves). This all works well in my opinion and the old style wrestling really comes off this way.
With JR and Jerry Lawler commentating and the likes of Mr Fuji, Bobby Heenan and Jimmy Hart helping the naughtier members of the roster this really takes you back to the 1980’s when the over the top characters really made wrestling enjoyable.
With no story mode as such, the user is left the option to relive or rewrite certain selected Wrestlemania matches, complete with real life footage and the story to the matches. Although this takes away from the replayability long term it is a good starting point (if there are any sequels to be made)
The create a legend has some really cool features and 1 particular annoyingly poor one, for me the best feature in this area is the chance to use custom music meaning your created legends can come out to their real music if you choose to make any former legends. However the worst aspect of this game is the fact that when assigning a movelist you can only choose one of the finishers already assigned to a default roster member. I feel THQ have badly missed the boat here as they have put the parts/attires for the likes of Razor Ramon, Demolition, Randy Savage etc, but their finishing moves are not included and that is very frustrating.
If you have a Smackdown vs Raw save on your HD you can import the roster over from that and the characters movesets are slimmed down and is a pretty good addition too.
For me I think the game is an 8/10 due to the finishing move frustration and the lack of a real story mode but if you were into wrestling in the late 80’s and early 90’s this will put a smile back on your face and it really is a massive improvement on previous legends games.

Jason
Any word from your buddy on Earthquake and Muraco?
Neil
As far as I have heard Earthquake and Muraco were removed at the last minute but all their attire was left in the CAL. Earthquake’s wife apparently refused permission for his inclusion but as for Muraco I don’t know why he was removed
Jason
Ahh alright…I appreciate the information!
Frank
Thanks for the info Neil, I was actually wondering why I didn’t see Earthquake in the game. It’s kinda disappointing, especially considering he was a character in the game.
Disappointed with the limitations & the size of the roster in WWE LOW
If that is true about Earthquake then why was he included as DLC
for SvR 2009 almost 2 months later???

I love this game so much. I agree that the roster is a little limited. Perhaps scope for a download? The gameplay is far ahead of previous titles though.

I remember watching these matches as a kid with my dad. Oh, how the years has passed. Now I played the games, while the my dad still enjoys watching them act. I think I never quite enjoy it after knowing that most of the matches are stage, but hey, the game is super fun. Thanks for sharing.
